Difference between Shampoo, Conditioner & Mask

Hello! For this article, we're going to talk about the difference between shampoo, conditioner, and mask. Most of us should know what shampoo is how important it is to shampoo our hair but do you also know the importance of conditioner and mask too?

Let me start with the basics. To clean our hair, we will require shampoo as its primary function is to remove dirt and oil. Oil and water don’t mix so it will be extremely ineffective. The oil will accumulate itself, blocking the pores which will result in hair loss. In order for shampoo to do the cleaning, they have cleansers that trap oil and dirt to wash it away and keep your hair clean.

In addition, certain shampoo will contain moisturizers and conditioning ingredients that help the hair looking soft and silky. Also, if your hair is greasy, there are also shampoo with more focus on the cleanser than the moisturizers, mainly a deep clean shampoo.

Shampoo cleans the hair but how do we make our hair look better? That’s where the hair conditioner comes into play. The conditioner is a necessary second step as it softens, nourishes and protects the hair. It also helps to lock moisture in the hair. There are several uses for conditioner, when your hair tangles often, you should use a conditioner so that it’s not as dry.

When your hair tangles, it’s a sign that the hair is lacking hydration. Conditioner also helps to balance the pH levels in your hair. A normal pH balance seals your hair cuticles to maintain its moisture and natural oils while preventing unwanted breakage. There are conditioners that come with extra benefits, such as UV protection and frizz reduction. It is really the base to fight frizz or to increase volume.

And since the conditioner already provide so much value, why do we need the hair mask then? It is true that they are similar in nature but think of hair mask as a deep conditioning high-powered treatment that offers more intense and powerful benefits.

Hair masks are treatments that are formulated with hair oils and other hydrating ingredients so they spend more time sinking into and nurturing hair than the average conditioner, giving dramatic benefits in a single use.

So how often should we be using the shampoo, conditioner, and mask? For shampoo and conditioner, it’s pretty simple, use the conditioner whenever you shampoo your hair. For long hair, conditioner is a must because the natural oil doesn’t reach that far so the hair ends tend to get dry quite easily.

Shampoo starts at the scalp but conditioner starts at the hair ends, it does not need to touch the scalp. The scalp is the best-hydrated area of the hair due to the natural oil so it does not really require the conditioner otherwise it might get overly greasy and suffocate the follicle, resulting in hair loss. For hair mask, depending on your hair condition and how damaged it is, it is enough to use it 1 or 2 times a week. It can help to reduce hair breakage and make your hair feel healthy.

If you want to have nice, smooth and healthy hair, you should consider using a conditioner and mask instead of just a shampoo alone.
