Are You Making These Common Hair Mistakes?

Try using a bath towel and rub it against your face multiple times. Does it hurt? Imagine the pain you are causing to your hair when you do that everyday.

Hello! My name is Zell. Now that most of us are mostly staying at home, I’ll write something relevant that will somehow apply to most of us. All of us, I hope! Everybody washes their hair, right? Haha. If you have ever washed your hair in this lifetime, it will be relevant to you. And in this article, we’re also going to talk about the common mistakes that we make that will indirectly cause damages to our hair.

Let’s think back, how did you learn how to use shampoo? By imitating our parents, at least for me, I was taught to put it on my hand and next, on my head. I was also taught to wash my hair every day to keep my hair clean. As I grow older and now that my job is in the hair industry, I learned that it is actually not good for the hair to be washed every day. And this is the common mistake 1 -

Washing your hair too often

In this situation where it is good to wash your hands frequently to wash the virus and dirt off your hands, it might cause some dryness to your hands. The same goes for our hair too. And in my previous article, I wrote this: A general rule of thumb is, the drier your hair is, the less you should wash your hair.

And ironically, the more you wash your hair, the drier it becomes and after that when it becomes very dry, you will need to wash it less. And the vicious cycle repeats. Before it becomes confusing, let me just set this straight. You actually don’t have to wash your hair everyday. If you have colored hair, it is best to wash it once every 2 to 3 days. If you wash it everyday and one day skips washing, your hair will be particularly oily on that day. This is because the scalp knows how much oil to produce on a single day to protect your hair. It knows that every 24 hours you wash the hair and it will wash off all the natural sebum (oil) so it has been programmed to produce this fixed amount of sebum every single day. And skipping one day of hair washing, your scalp will now have twice the normal amount of oil.

Most of the time when we try to cut back on washing the hair, we will notice that the hair will become oilier and we will go back to washing it every day. It takes a while for the scalp to reprogram itself on the new routine. Give it a week or two, let it learn by itself again on how much oil it should be producing now. If it used to produce 1ml of oil on the hair every day, when you change your routine and wash it once every 2 days, it will slowly learn by itself to only produce 1ml of oil every 2 days but this “learning” will take a while. If you can endure this 2-weeks window (at least), you will be doing your hair a lot of good. Don’t give up after 2 to 3 days!

Conditioning the hair wrongly

I have customers who use conditioners like hair shampoo and apply on every part of the hair and head. Using conditioner on the scalp will coat the scalp that will cause a build-up of sebum. It will become a lot oilier after a few days. Conditioner is not meant for the scalp. The reason why conditioning your hair is important is that our natural sebum is not able to travel that far, at most 10 to 15cm of the hair. The natural sebum will protect the hair from the dryness and damages. Have you noticed that usually the ends are not as healthy compared to the roots or the first 10cm of the hair? The credit goes to the natural sebum that protects the top half of the hair. And having an ability to predict the future like a cool hair prophet, I’m guessing you are now asking what about the lower half of the hair. Hahaha. That’s the magic of the conditioner. By using a conditioner, it helps to soften, nourish and protect the hair. It also helps to lock moisture in the hair. Use it often!

Using the bath towel to dry the hair conveniently

Have you tried to rub the bath towel against your face multiple times roughly? It hurts, right? Why are you doing that to your hair? Just because there are no nerves in your hair, it doesn’t mean it is not feeling the pain. Don’t do that. When you cover the wet hair and rub it roughly, you are causing it to be tangled and break off in the process. And imagine doing that every single time after you washed your hair, after all these years, how many strands of hair have you lost? Let’s treat our hair with respect and care, like how you want others to treat you. Love your hair and it will love you back! :)

In conclusion, your health 5 years from now is decided by mostly your genes and the food you eat. If you are eating junk food frequently, would you be healthy? No. The same goes for our hair too. If we are making these mistakes every day, would the hair condition be good? You can do the most expensive treatment every month but if the bad habits and mistakes persist, the hair condition will still be bad. Change your bad hair habits and your hair will change, for the better. If you need any help with your hair issue, you know where to find us. Just head to our fb page and send us a message.
